Ottawa Demonstration - June 5th, 2006

A Brief Report by the ChaldoAssyrian Demonstration Coordination Committee

On Monday June 5th, 2006, an eager group of ChaldoAssyrians residing in Canada gathered together early morning anticipating a drive of approximately 450 kilometers to the capital city of Canada, Ottawa. The purpose of their organized trip was to express their concern towards the deliberate marginalization policy against the ChaldoAssyrians’ role in the formulation of the political identity in modern Iraq.

The group reached Ottawa at around 11:00 AM and began their initial protest in front of the Iraqi embassy. The politely aggressive group, ranging from young adolescents to seniors in demand of their rights as the indigenous minority continuously chanted slogans such as, “We will not accept Kurdish Democratic Party’s monopolization of trusteeship over ChaldoAssyrian minorities!” Once the Iraqi Ambassador accepted the letter written by the coordination committee, the group prepared for their march to the American Embassy.

As they made their way towards the American Embassy, the energetic group did not hesitate to continue their chants while coordinators handed out information concerning the protest to the bystanders. They expressed their frustration at the lack of support they continue to receive from the Americans and fraudulent agenda set forward by the Kurdish Democratic Party. The group then continued to their final destination after a letter written to the ambassador was issued to the American Embassy.

The final stop was made at the Parliament Hill building. The group rallied for Canadian support in peacefully involving itself through funding and administrating projects that would ensure the proper distribution of funds for developing and advancing infrastructure in the Nineveh Plains. The protest ended following the delivery of a letter addressed to Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

After the Parliament Hill visit, the group gathered all together for their journey back home.

More information regarding the protest will soon be posted. Please click here to view pictures of the event.
